چکیده

It was discovered recently that the charge of gas bubbles in aqueous solution can be reduced and even reversed by the addition of multivalent inorganic saltsIn this work. the effect of LaCI3 on the charge of bubbles was investigated and found to have an effect similar to that previously observed with AICI3 and MgC12The electrokinetic behavior of gas bubbles was affected slightly by LaCI3 additions at low concentrations but changed markedly at high concentration (I x 10-3 mol dm3) of LaC13A reversal of bubble charge was observed and this is attributed to the specific adsorption of La3 + in the lower pH region and to the formation of La(OH)3(s) precipitate at the gas-liquid interface in the

Reversal of Bubble Charge in Multivalent Inorganic Salt Solutions -Effect of Aluminum

The charge of bubbles in aqucous solution is important in detemlining their interactions with particles, droplets, and other bubbles. While bubbles are known to be negatively charged in such media as water and sodium chloride solutions, they are found here to exhibit unusual positive surface charge chamcteristics in solutions of trivalent aluminum cations. Analysis of the results indicates that...

Adsorption of polyelectrolytes to like-charged substrates induced by multivalent counterions as exemplified by poly(styrene sulfonate) and silica.

The present study demonstrates that multivalent counterions trigger adsorption of polyelectrolytes on a like-charged substrate. In particular, adsorption of polystyrene sulfonate on silica is studied experimentally in NaCl, MgCl2, and LaCl3 solutions by optical reflectivity. While adsorption is negligible in the presence of Na(+), the polyelectrolyte adsorbs in the presence of Mg(2+) and La(3+)...

Charge reversal of colloidal particles

– A theory is presented for the effective charge of colloidal particles in suspensions containing multivalent counterions. It is shown that if colloids are sufficiently strongly charged, the number of condensed multivalent counterion can exceed the bare colloidal charge leading to charge reversal. Charge renormalization in suspensions with multivalent counterions depends on a subtle interplay b...

Extraction of cartilage protein-polysaccharides with inorganic salt solutions.

1. Bovine nasal cartilage was extracted with inorganic salt solutions of various ionic strengths. The efficiency of extraction of protein-polysaccharide from the tissue was determined for each extraction. The results confirm and enlarge earlier observations (Sajdera & Hascall, 1969). 2. The chloride salts of lanthanide metals extract high yields of protein-polysaccharide from the tissue at much...

Effects of multivalent salt addition on effective charge of dilute colloidal solutions.

The effective charge Z* is often invoked to account for the accumulation of counterions near the colloid with intrinsic charge Z. Although the ion concentrations c(i) are not uniform in the solution due to the presence of the charged particle, their chemical potentials are uniform everywhere. Thus, on the basis of ion chemical potential, effective ion concentrations c(i)*, which can be experime...
